Coleman Carlsbad 4-Person Dome Dark Room Tent with Screen Room

This is a tent that may work for a family with two or three small children and two adults. It says "four persons" but in the tent world, that means four people, two of whom aren't six foot plus monsters like us. (My husband was 6'7" and he LOVED camping. I stupidly bought a four man tent, thinking it was fine for TWO people who were tall--I'm 5'11" but back it went to REI for a huge six man tent--me, me, him, him, him and him.) SO ....I think THIS tent would work if you are two regular sized adults and have about two-three kids no older than eight or ten.

The advantage of this tent is quite clever. It's dark inside. DARK. If you like to sleep in or go to bed early and it's up north and days are LONG, it will be light at eight pm and the very little ones will have trouble going to sleep. The inside of this tent is lined with dark fabric. Well--I've camped off and on for decades and it's about time! Tents I've camped in are usually sunshine yellow or sunrise orange and you are up with the birdies, admiring the morning light and staggering to the campfire to figure out the fastest way to brew something, ANYTHING with caffeine. This tent lets you either sleep in or...better yet, put the wee ones to bed and then sit out in the screened porch and admire the view. If the weather is really nice and dry, an older kid could even sleep in the screened area (not weather-proof. It will be damper than inside the tent.) Tent has a full floor, too. Though I always suggest you put seam sealant on every seam. And trench around the tent if you are at that kind of campsite that lets you modify the site. It rains a lot here (we've had fourteen days of rain broken up by only one dry day. We're dry in summer but in Pennsylvania, it does rain like a tropical rainforest.)

The disadvantage of this tent is that it's four-person (see my problem, being tall.) And it's also a dome tent, so it's not as high in the center as other types of tents. If you want to camp in home-like comfort, a good choice might be Coleman Weathermaster II Screened 10 Person 16 X 10 Tent with Hinged Door and Autoroll Windows, 7 Feet Tall and Fits 4 Queen Air Beds The Weathermaster fits up to four queen air beds and is seven feet tall. It also has two full rooms. If you are a family with bigger kids (and adults....) I'd suggest something like this. My niece, her husband and (at that time) one three year old camped at our beautiful Cape Henlopen State Park (on the Delaware Bay, with beaches and a pretty town, Lewes, nearby). Despite their smaller family, this is like their tent. They put up an additional pavilion style tent for dining and had a great time.

The other issue is the storage: if you have tiny kids, you have more gear--seems to be an inverse proportion to age. The younger, the more packed the car is with diapers, potties, toys, blankets, pillow ,foods, you name it. The Coleman Carlsbad can fit two airbeds but not a ton of gear inside the tent.

Summary: this is a great tent for families with small kids or someone who is disturbed by any light when sleeping (many many people like this.) Keeps cool, screen porch is lovely for buggy or drizzly nights. Packs small--no bigger than a duffle bag. As usual, Coleman understands how people camp out.
